How to troubleshoot and resolve "access denied" error on shared network drive?

I am a system administrator and I am currently managing a network of servers. However, one of the users reports that there is an issue that is stating an “access denied” error while trying to access a critical file on a shared network drive. How can I troubleshoot and resolve this particular issue?

In the context of AWS, here is how you can approach troubleshooting and resolve the issue of “access denied”:-

Checking permission

First, you should check that the user who is attempting to access the file has the necessary permission and appropriate access rights.

Review security settings

Try to ensure that the security settings on the file and even folder are correctly configured to allow the user or their group to access the resource.

User roles and groups

Try to confirm that the user is a member of the appropriate user group or even role that has been granted access to the file or folder.

Network connectivity

You can check for any network connectivity issues which are causing the “access denied” error. You can test network connectivity to the shared drive for this particular objective.

Here is an example of how you can check and modify file permissions:-

# Check file permissions
$file = “C:PathToFile.txt”
$acl = Get-Acl -Path $file
$acl.Access | Format-Table IdentityReference, FileSystemRights, AccessControlType
# Grant read access to a specific user
$permission = “DOMAINUser”
$access = “Read”
$rule = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.FileSystemAccessRule($permission, $access, “Allow”)
$acl.SetAccessRule($rule)
Set-Acl -Path $file -AclObject $acl
