Explain average precision

It measures the positions of relevant documents in a ranking manner. If the relevant documents are not retrieved they are counted with zero precision and thus the overall precision decreases. Out of three relevant documents of total five queried documents, if first and second is retrieved and not the third, then the average precision is calculated as

(1/2+2/3+0)/3=0.39 or 39%
