I was working on a data analysis project using Microsoft Excel. How can I determine the file extension of Excel files during sharing the data with someone who is using a different software or when storing the data in a version control system?

In the context of data science the file extension of MS Excel or the file extension which is commonly incorporated with Microsoft Excel is “.xlsx” based on Excel 2007 and onwards. The previous or older file extension of MS Excel was “.xls”.

In your scenario of sharing the data to a different software the “.xlsx” would ensure compatibility with a wide range of software. It will enhance the integrity of the data and also facilitate control. Therefore, this is a generalized format that is widely accepted in the field of data science as it can retain the fidelity of data which can lead to a suitable process of storing datasets.
