Both are different tools and used for different purposes. Tableau desktop is used for the report development while the tableau server is used for hosting those reports and sharing with others. Although you can edit the reports on the tableau server as well, the major development will be done on the desktop product. The similarity between both is, both are the premium product and comes with 14-days of the free trial.
